After investing 5.6 million dollars in a restoration of The Golden Lamb, the 205-year-old restaurant and inn in Lebanon, its owners and operators hope visitors do not immediately notice the changes.

The project, which took two years, aimed to improve the systems and structure of the building while not disturbing its historic ambiance. The final results were officially unveiled yesterday by former Congressman Rob Portman and his brother Wym Portman, who own the building, and Stevens Hospitality, the operators of the restaurant and inn.

“We worked with historians on the project so you wouldn’t really notice the changes,” said Steven D. Mullinger of Stevens Hospitality. First impressions of the inn, with its brick façade and white porch, its antique-filled guest rooms and traditional dining room, are the same. Most of the money went into improvement such as a new roof, replacing most of the plumbing, adding central heating and air conditioning, and remodeling the kitchen. Bricks were salvaged from a building in Over-the-Rhine to replace crumbling facade, old glass was preserved when necessary, and fireplaces were brought back into operation. Window air conditioning units were removed.
