Fun New Years Eve Activities for Northern Ohio Families

It’s almost time to say goodbye to 2007 and ring in 2008. New Years Eve means a lot of parties, some which prove to be inappropriate for families due to the crowds and the alcohol. However, there are still some events in Northern Ohio that are safe and fun for all ages. Here are my suggestions:

Noon Year’s Eve, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Cleveland, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This is a family-friendly event complete with a Wild Animal Show, meet and greet with Nickelodeon characters, and crafts. Admission is inexpensive; it is free for zoo members and youngsters under two. Full itinerary and prices are available at the zoo’s website.

Cedar Point’s indoor water park, Castaway Bay, in Sandusky, OH has planned an evening of New Years Eve events for the entire family. In addition to the water slides and pool fun (which already sounds like a blast to me!) there will be visiting with Peanuts characters, family pictures, crafts, karaoke, movie, a band, and much more. At midnight there will be a balloon drop accompanied with grape juice “champagne”. Many of these activities will be held on New Years Day, as well. While these events are unlikely to disappoint, there is a cost involved. A day pass for one to the water park is $29.00; resort package prices vary.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season & a great 2008.

There is something fishy about New Year‘s Eve in Port Clinton, Ohio. This small Ohio town, located on the shores of Lake Erie is best known for it’s entertainment, nightlife and fishing. With hotels and condominiums popping up on every corner, the small town of Port Clinton is on it’s way to becoming one of the most exciting towns in America. Port Clinton, Ohio, has officially earned the title, Walleye Capital of the World. It is well known for it’s annual Walleye Festival and is the home to Wylie the Walleye.

New Years Eve in Port Clinton may seem like something right out of a Dr. Seuss book. In fact this New Years Eve celebration is so bizarre it has been featured on Ripley’s Believe it or not. What makes it so wacky? Come and see for yourself. On December 31, 2006 Port Clinton, will celebrate it’s 10th annual Walleye Madness Walleye Drop! For the 10th year in a row the Mayor of Port Clinton, Ohio will drop a 20 foot, 600 lb paper Mache walleye, named Wylie from the sky. The festivities take place on Madison Avenue, in the heart of downtown Port Clinton on New Years Eve. The fun begins at 10:31 pm with the opening song, Hang on Wylie. At 10:41 join the crowd as they cheer for the best onstage performance, as the walleye competition contestants are announced. Followed by the commercial fisherman of the year award presentation at 10:50. At 11:35 a hysterical onstage performance of Mack the Knife will be performed. Finally, the evening will wrap up with the walleye chant. Join the crowd as they cheer “Give me a W, give me a Y, give me L, Give me an I, Give me an E!! Give me Wylie!! Happy New Year!” At midnight Wylie will drops from the sky like a sack of potatoes. The crowd will roar and the streets of Port Clinton will be hopping with the sound joy for the new year. While at the event you can munch on some wild walleye popcorn, walleye chowder, walleye sandwiches and walleye cinnamon chips.

If that is not enough excitement for you, check out the New Year’s Eve bash at Nicks Roadhouse. Nicks is located at 124 Buckeye Blvd in Port Clinton. The party is sponsored by Mix 102.7 and the cost is $12 at the door.
