What Would JOAN Do? is the visual tale of Joan, an early 1960's housewife who overcomes her fears and finds the courage to fight back and eventually leave her abusive husband Dick. Welcome to the 44th Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, Central Ohio's one-day blind juried arts festival on Labor Day Monday September 6, 2010. The legendary German band NEU!, released only three albums in the early 1970s that showcased Michael Rother's darkly droning electric guitar excursions lifting off over Klaus Dinger's propulsive motorik drumming. But their widespread influence continues to ripple in the directions taken by artists ranging from David Bowie to Sonic Youth, U2, and Wilco among many others. While assembling the recently released NEU! vinyl box set, Rother was inspired to invite Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Benjamin Curtis of School of Seven Bells, and Aaron Mullan of Tall Firs to perform the music of NEU! in concert with him. They'll also offer selections from Rother's stint in Harmonia, a group Brian Eno called the world's most important rock band. - Thurber House Evening With Authors: Thrity Umrigar - September 10, 2010 / Columbus Performing Arts Center
Indian journalist and author Thrity Umrigar's new novel, The Weight of Heaven, explores the tragedy of a child's sudden death and its impact on the parents' relationship. Ellie and Frank Benton have lost their young son, and while they are struggling to overcome their grief, Frank's boss offers him the opportunity to oversee one of the company factories in a small Indian village. - Hot Times Community Music & Arts Festival - September 10-12, 2010 / Olde Towne East
The Hot Times Music & Arts Festival is an independent, yearly, all volunteer, community arts and music festival, held in a large, grassy area with mature hardwood trees. The three-day event showcases local and nationally known professional musicians, dancers, poets, visual and performance artists.
